The Flying Toaster Graveyard
Thursday Dec 27th 2007
Wow, have we come a long way from the screensavers of yesteryear. I remember not too long ago being speechless while magical windows and toasters flew across the screen, or being transformed into a space traveler hitting warp speed. We definitely have come a long way from the screensavers that made our computers run even slower.
At first my computer was like every other unit fresh out the box, but once I discovered customizable screensavers and wallpapers, I knew I was a changed man. There was one individual who is responsible for changing me into a screensaver, wallpaper downloading, customizing my desktop background and theme maniac, and his name...Neo. I got to admit, even before the ending credits were over after watching the first Matrix movie, I jumped right in my car (ok ok...got picked up from my parents) and went right to my computer to download the blockbuster's screensaver which I had just witnessed for 2 hours at what seemed to be 100 feet tall. Not only did I set up the screensaver, but I got the Matrix themed desktop; Neo was 'My Computer', Morpheus was 'My Documents', and of course Agent Smith was the 'Recycling Bin'.
Oh how the options have exploded in the last few years. It doesn't matter who you are, where you're from, there are so many options to help you turn your computer into a lean, mean, personalized machine. If only the wallpaper in my bedroom were able to change as quickly as the wallpaper does on my computer.
Wallpapers, desktop themes, and screensavers are just another way for individuals to express themselves. Screensavers aren't just a cool program that pops up to impress the people around you, they define who you are. You without doubt can tell a lot about a person from the theme they have chosen. Let's say you see an adult with a cartoon screensaver...they might just a kid at heart who's not ready to grow up yet. Or an older person whose desktop is of an antique car... they might be reliving their youth. Or say you see a big, tough, scary looking man who has kittens on his screen...ok, that's a little weird, but that man might just need a hug and have a love of animals. But just like those people, it's a mystery what I will have as my wallpaper, screensaver, or desktop them next week. Will it be a movie theme that I saw? A TV show I have grown to love? Or will it be that same little kitten? Only time will tell, but there is one thing I do know, it will have nothing to do with any flying kitchen utensils!
